Homework Reflections: The Witch Way
- Nature-centric design, systems based approach - how do we remove ego & make humans less the main champion
- We have abstracted ourselves so far from nature that we don’t know where things come from that we have become so removed from nature because humans are bad listeners
- Check out Donna Haraway’s book
Happenings in the chat
- Sam: how are we creating new symbiotic relationships? If we use AI or machines, is it then humans who are creating symbiosis, or the machine/robot and AI doing the same?
- Sarah Naghmi: I missed the comment on generative AI but I thought id add since that’s one area I wrote about - a specific example that stood out to me was how when the program was tasked with designing a drone chassis, its output resembled a squirrel’s pelvis lol - generally I think it’s so cool how a lot of the generative design outputs resemble skeletal or coralesque designs that mimic nature. (Wrote more on this a while back in case anyone is interested: https://medium.com/predict/generative-ai-enabling-a-new-way-of-design-ac3d853e795c?sk=335a3fa3f93801677df2209ac1366fa5)
- Kelly Heaton: It is not possible to distinguish between human and machine intelligence. It is a symbiotic consciousness.
- Cristina Napoleone: the moment in time when we separated ourselves from 'nature’, is the same moment in time we lost touch with language, those that we just starting to relearn their alphabets and vocabularies once again. (this is the idea I attempted to unravel a little in my homework response - though it's a big topic and there are some wonderful authors who articulate this notion really well)
- Kelly Heaton: “Separating ourselves from nature" was a purely perceptual shift. It is truly analogous to a narcissist who refuses to see their role in a traumatic relationship.
- Cristina Napoleone: two pretty central books that come to mind and are a great jumping off point, which I'm sure many here may already be familiar are ‘The Spell of the Sensuous' by David Abram, and 'Braiding Sweetgrass' & ‘Gathering Moss’ by Robin Wall-Kimmerer

Workshop: Storytelling
- It’s important to be able to communicate & present stories that can be generally understood even by young children
- Your origin story; create a public narrative
- Stories have been critical with movement making & creating change
- Stories have the ability to change perception
